A Spanish research has found that there may be a link between trans fats and depression. During the study researchers followed 12,000 people for a period of six years and found that those who had 1.5 grams of trans fats a day were 48 percent more likely to develop depression than those who had none.


The reasoning behind this is that trans fats may cause depression by stopping the nervous system from sending feel good chemicals through the body. “trans fatty acids cause a decrease in the correct transmission of the nervous response and decrease in neurorotection and neuronal regeneration.” Professor Almudena Sanchez Villegas.

The research also observed people in the study who had diets containing healthly fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils). The study found those who consumed more than 20 grams of olive oil a day were 30 percent less likely to develop depression.

With the other evidence of trans fats causing cardio vascular disease and other issues inside the body, why are they even used?

Kraft explained “Trans fats give foods the texture people expect and help them stay fresh for longer”.

As consumers we need to be aware of what is in our products but unfortunately the laws in regards to labels are not on the side of the consumer. “Manufacturers are only required to disclose the amount of trans fat in the nutrition panel if they make a claim about fat content, but the majority of products aren’t required to list it,” says Clare Hughes, Choice’s senior food policy adviser.


Trans fats can also be listed under “hydrogenated” or “hydrogenised”. With the increasing amount of evidence about trans fats not being good for us and many places looking to ban it. So the best recommendation for all is check what you are eating and be aware if there are trans fats and to avoid it.
